James Patterson
Although he also writes single-title Suspense novels, James Patterson is best known for his first series, set in Washington, D.C., featuring detective/psychologist Alex Cross. Patterson began writing in the 1980s, but Along Came a Spider, published in 1993, was his breakout book. Two reasons seem to account for his tremendous success: he writes page-turning books that encourage readers to devour them in one sitting and come back for more; and his books appeal to both male and female readers. Patterson writes fast-paced, violent, and compulsively readable novels of hard-edged suspense, with details of the crime and criminal as well as police procedures. (NoveList)
